As an Immersive Catwalk, Kim Jones Recreated Christian Dior’s Childhood Home

Given the overwhelming fashion week schedule, Kim Jones made the decision to send him to Paris in an elaborate storybook cottage/holiday home (complete with backyard garden), as the chance of a cheeky vacation is effectively nonexistent.

Despite the fact that many of us yearn for the chaos (and exorbitant rents) that inner-city living brings, country life has a special and utterly calming charm. Because those who can handle adversity yearn for crystal-clear skies, meandering garden paths, and delicate foliage that encircles windows and terracotta tiles.

Jones’ vision transports us to a world of meticulously maintained flower gardens and alluring coastlines, alluding to Christian Dior‘s own childhood home. His models glide through the landscape in subdued hues, from blues as light as steel or as dark as the bottoms of the deepest oceans to blushing beige and tropical seafoam green.

Think chic windbreakers with quarter-zips in shimmering silks, fans with palm prints, and stylish sunhats that are too fancy for a festival but ideal for a trip to the well. In addition to cannage stitch parkas and bobble knit beanies, there were also large backpacks.

The Bloomsbury Group’s prominent member and designer Duncan Grant was one of the show is many artistic inspirations. He served as the direct inspiration for Jones’ pastel-hued “Safety Curtain” knits, which were worn with slinky red-gingham shorts that looked like the lining of a picnic basket, further enhancing the fairytale vibe.

As loose tailoring meets broach-bearing tunic tops, embroidered fleeces, pinstripe shorts, and deconstructed tote-vests, gardening gear also received a clear look-in. Jones left us feeling reborn, reenergized, and eager to embrace the natural world by deftly bridging enormous gaps between technical sportswear codes and the traditional tailoring upon which Dior built his own sweet home.
