FW23 Collection: 1017 ALYX 9SM and Mark Flood Push Boundaries of Style and Art

Matthew M. Williams1017 ALYX 9SM took us on a journey of collaboration and inspiration for their Fall/Winter 2023 collection. Teaming up with American artist Mark Flood, the runway show was held at the Spazio Maiocchi Gallery, an ideal setting for the brand’s nuanced designs accented with Flood’s painterly touch.

The collection showcased a mix of advanced technical fabrics and traditional artisan craftsmanship. Raw hemmed wool blazers were paired with overdyed denim two pieces, while fuzzy neon faux fur was paired with techy bomber jackets. The collection was also heavily inspired by Flood’s artistry and the subcultures of Williams’ youth, with angsty graphic slogans sitting atop hoodies and tees, and punkish leather fashioned into oversized cargos and distressed biker jackets.

Handcraft was also a key element, with many pieces featuring moments of distressing that allow the pieces to adapt with wear. The stud detailing, which featured heavily across bandanas, boots, and tailoring, was hand-applied by Italian craftsmen. On the runway, we also saw the introduction of chunky soles integrated into all footwear styles, from oversized military boots to cowboy boots for women.

The collection was a chic throwback to grunge, with menswear pieces rooted in 1017 ALYX 9SM’s signatures and womenswear leaning into Williams’ Givenchy codes with sleek silhouettes and subverted tailoring. Flood’s artwork will also be exhibited in the Studio Maiocchi showspace post-show, giving guests the opportunity to further explore the artist’s visceral output.
