Apple Original Films reportedly acquired the film rights to the book, with Scorsese serving as the director and Leonardo DiCaprio playing the lead roles. Richard Plepler of Eden Productions will executive produce, along with Dan Friedkin and Bradley Thomas of Imperative Entertainment, Martin Scorsese of Sikelia Productions, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Jennifer Davisson of Appian Way Productions.

The Wager is set in the 1740s and tells the tale of 30 men who are the last of a British ship’s crew to survive and who crash land on the coast of Brazil. Six months later, when a different ship makes landfall off the coast of Chile, the crew accuses the crew of the other ship of mutinying.

The British Admiralty attempts to straighten the story and find the facts with a trial that aims to figure out what exactly happened on the island, and they hear a story of how they struggled “to survive one of the most extreme climates on the planet, but also battling their own human natures.”

The Wager will follow Killers of the Flower Moon, which will release in 2023.
