The cornerstones of Raf Simons‘ design identity, which has permeated his collections since 1995 and is now acting as the anchor for the Belgian fashion legend’s most recent partnership with Fred Perry, include youth culture, underground scenes, teenage angst, romanticization of the North of England, working-class undertones, and the melting pot that brings these qualities together.
The North of England is being honored and celebrated in this latest collaboration between the two brands, which Simons is familiar with particularly in terms of culture as he frequently alludes to Peter Saville, New Order, and Joy Division.
Simons delved into Northern Soul music for the collaboration, inventing imaginary record labels, artists, and song titles, all of which receive special mention throughout the collection.
The collaborative effort that celebrates the North can be found throughout the collection, from the signature polo shirt to T-shirts, rollneck tops with Simons’ metal laurel wreath motif on the neck and his eponymous signature on the arm, as well as brushed cotton twill denim jackets and matching trousers, a Harrington jacket, unlined blazer, Parka jacket, socks, and more.
For instance, the Parka is the star of the upcoming season. The traditional features of this outerwear silhouette, such as epaulets, a drawstring waist, a fishtail hem, and flap pockets, are now joined by a large print on the back that is reminiscent of the Soul scene and is complemented by embroidered patches.
Other notable pieces include the three-button blazer, buttoned cuffs with rose motifs on the left arm and a graphic on the chest, which go well with a matching pair of trousers. On the polos, dual-branded laurel wreaths are prominent, and on the back of a hooded sweater, there is a nearly logomanic array of badges.
