Nothing

Take a First Look at the Nothing phone (1)

Nothing has given a private audience at Art Basel the first look at its highly-anticipated phone (1), with the official launch less than a month away. The Nothing phone (1), like its predecessors, has a transparent casing with a unique mechanical design made up of over 400 components.

The phone’s durable and lightweight exterior frame is made entirely of recycled aluminum, and half of the phone’s plastic components are made from bio-based or post-consumer recycled materials.

Former Dyson designer Adam Bates is leading the design team behind the futuristic smartphone, drawing inspiration from artists such as Massimo Vignelli, who designed New York’s subway map and turned a complex system into art.

The iPhone 12 appears to have similar side button layouts, flattened edges, and dual rear-facing cameras, and a closer look at the contents of the clear case back reveals a large integrated charging coil, white light strips, and “Nothing” branding along the bottom.

In terms of functionality, Carl Pei, co-founder and CEO of the technology company, has hinted that the phone will be heavily software-focused, running a custom version of Android and powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset.

“For years now, it felt like all the artists had left the industry. All we’re left with are cold, unexciting and derivative products. It was time for a fresh take.” said Pei. “phone (1) was designed out of instinct, making a product for ourselves and more importantly that we would be proud to share with our loved ones. Can’t wait for people to start experiencing it.”
