The Spelling Manor Estate in Los Angeles Goes on Market for $165 Million

The Spelling Manor last changed hands in 2019, when it sold for $119.75 million to an undisclosed buyer, making it the highest recorded residential sale in Los Angeles County at the time.

Three years later, the famed estate’s current price of $165 million would fall short of the new California record set a year ago when venture capitalist Marc Andreessen paid $177 million for a Malibu property.

Nonetheless, the $165 million asking price for a single-family home is one of the highest in the country.

The French chateau-inspired estate, which measures over 56,000 square feet, was built for late TV producer Aaron Spelling and his widow, Candy Spelling. Candy Spelling went to great lengths to personalize the sprawling estate, including a flower-cutting room, a film editing area behind the screen of the home’s movie theater, and a wine and cheese room with Parisian-style tables and chairs.

Prior to the record-breaking sale in 2019, the home was owned by Formula One heiress Petra Ecclestone, who paid $85 million in cash for the property.

During her time as a resident, Ecclestone oversaw extensive renovations, including the addition of a beauty salon, an aquarium, and a nightclub.

The home, which spans well over an acre of living space, has 27 bathrooms and 14 bedrooms, including a 7,500-square-foot master suite.

A French-door solarium, a formal dining room, and a grand foyer with a 30-foot ceiling, as well as a game room, a bowling alley, and a tanning room, are among the other attractions.

Ecclestone’s partner, real estate agent and lifestyle entrepreneur Sam Palmer, revealed in a Forbes interview last year that the 123-room, W-shaped mansion requires a staff of 50 people to keep it running.

Rose gardens, citrus orchards, and acres of lawn are cared for by a team of landscapers. In addition, the home’s numerous fountains, statuary, koi ponds, swimming pool, and sports courts all need to be maintained on a regular basis.

Among the raft of features is a bowling alley.

The property, which sits on 4.7 acres in the posh Holmby Hills neighborhood, borders the Los Angeles Golf Club and is just down the street from the Gregory Peck Estate and the Playboy Mansion.

The listing is held by Drew Fenton of Hilton & Hyland.
