Vickie Vainionpää Uses Generative Code to Create Enticing Paintings

Vickie Vainionpää‘s latest solo show at The Hole NYC features a tasteful interior. The Montreal-based artist invites you to immerse yourself in organic shapes that fold and twist to create hyper-real forms that resemble microorganisms, intestinal tangles, and perhaps even a desktop screensaver in Software.

Vainionpää creates her paintings using generative code, which involves plotting a set number of points along an x, y, and z axis. The B-spline lines that result are then carefully chosen as the starting point for her oil paintings on canvas. Vainionpää modifies the chosen directions by applying different textures and creating shadows using three-dimensional composites of multiple splines.

A symbiotic relationship between man and machine, the physical world and virtual reality is at the heart of Vainionpää’s practice. The artist examines the ever-changing relationship between the human body and digital technology by utilizing the daily splines generated by her work.

Software is on view at The Hole NYC’s Walker Street location until June 18.
