Step behind the doors of 10 avenue George V and enter the world of Balenciaga‘s Spring 2024 collection, aptly titled “Capital B.” In a visually captivating video directed by Mau Morgó, set to the rework of Édith Piaf‘s “Sous le Ciel de Paris” by BFRND, Demna Gvasalia unveils a collection that embraces the art of making clothes while shattering the notion of fashion as mere entertainment.
Gimmicks take a back seat in “Capital B,” allowing the craftsmanship, silhouettes, and the rich legacy of Balenciaga to take center stage. Demna proves himself to be a designer beyond his reputation for politically-informed T-shirts and controversial collaborations. Spring 2024 is a collection to be taken seriously, and it all begins with the iconic setting of 10 avenue George V, Balenciaga’s historical home and the house of its couture collections.
In a departure from traditional fashion presentations, Balenciaga intertwines its garments with the pulse of real life. The video captures familiar Balenciaga models and muses stepping out onto the Parisian streets, mingling with skateboarders, dog walkers, shoppers, and everyday Parisians going about their routines. This pared-down approach places the spotlight firmly on the clothes themselves.
The collection boasts a refined blend of Garde-Robe elegance and seasonal ready-to-wear, resulting in a cohesive wardrobe of Balenciaga uniforms that seamlessly transition from day to night. Balenciaga’s observation of metropolitan motion comes alive through the Hourglass jacket, a classic silhouette crafted from black dry wool gabardine. The collection continues to exude luxury with rib-knit cashmere turtlenecks, maxi skirts, pantaleggings, and accessories like the Hourglass Hinge medium bag and the Invisible Rectangle metal sunglasses.
Throughout the presentation, sophistication intertwines with playful elements. A smooth black leather belted robe coat catches the eye, while an oversized blazer in grey Merino Prince of Wales adds a touch of elegance. Demna’s creative flair shines through in the development of the Biker Boot into a pantashoe and the juxtaposition of beige cotton drill and blue denim in a hybrid car coat. Stickers, typically removed from denim, become branded accents on oversized jackets, and a parka coat is elongated to create a stunning cocoon neck dress.
Demna Gvasalia delivers on his promise with “Capital B.” The collection culminates in show-stopping pieces—a cocktail maxi dress adorned with black and silver sequins and a final look featuring silver sequin fringed embroidery that edges closer to demi-couture territory.
