FX Drops First Teaser Trailer for Docuseries ‘Dear Mama’ About Tupac and His Mother

The new FX docuseries Dear Mama tells the story of Tupac Shakur‘s late mother, Afeni, and the valuable lessons she taught him. Two images are layered over one another in the new teaser to complete the collage. A voiceover reveals the mother-son dynamic and discusses a particular challenge Afeni would present to Tupac.

The narrator made it clear that these were debates, not just discussions, when Afeni invited her son to debate New York Times issues. “It was my responsibility to teach Tupac how to survive his reality,” the voiceover said. So, if Tupac does something wrong, go sit in that corner, get the New York Times, and let us have a discussion about it. A debate, not a discussion. Allow me to hear your idea, then stand up and defend it.”

X describes the new docuseries to be “told through the eyes of the people who knew them best.” The five-part series, directed by Allen Hughes, will explore both Tupac and Afeni’s voices as they worked with two generations on their quest for equality and freedom.

Tupac died in 1996, a year after his song “Dear Mama” was released, and Afeni Shakur died in 2016. Similarly to the song, the docuseries based on the hit song continues to dissect Tupac’s relationship with his mother, paying tribute to the challenges she faced in raising him. This fall, FX will air Dear Mama.
