Enter the Microscopic Handbag, a miniature marvel inspired by Louis Vuitton’s iconic OnTheGo tote.
At a mere 657 by 222 by 700 micrometers in size, this semi-translucent handbag is smaller than a grain of sea salt. Chief Creative Officer Kevin Wiesner explains that the Microscopic Handbag serves as a thought-provoking commentary on the ever-shrinking world of luxury handbags. Once designed for functionality, these accessories have now transformed into flashy status symbols, where utility takes a backseat.
The choice of the OnTheGo silhouette was intentional, with its clean rectangular shape and prominent logo making it instantly recognizable. The slight translucence of the bag ensures that it becomes more visible when placed under the backlight of a microscope. As usual, MSCHF did not bother seeking permission from Louis Vuitton before embarking on this bold endeavor. In Wiesner’s words, “Pharrell loves big hats, so we made him an incredibly small bag,” a nod to the renowned artist’s penchant for unique fashion choices.
To bring this microscopic masterpiece to life, the MSCHF team collaborated with specialized industrial manufacturers in the field of biotechnology. The bag itself was crafted using a microscopic 3D printing process called two-photon polymerization, using resin as the material of choice. The result is an exquisitely detailed creation that pushes the boundaries of what is perceptible to the human eye.
The final product will be presented in a sealed gel case, delicately mounted under a microscope equipped with a digital display. This setup allows viewers to marvel at the minuscule dimensions of the Microscopic Handbag, offering a clear view of its intricate craftsmanship.
