The six-part documentary, aptly titled Nicki, is made by Bron Studios and begins with a brief video of Nicki Minaj showcasing her rapping skills.

Minaj continues by explaining how she had to learn how to become well-known on her own and how her early career is “for the girls who never thought they could win” because there were no female rappers in the spotlight at the time of her ascent. She continues by saying that she never sought out mainstream success; it found her, and that she is not treated with the same respect as male rappers.

“This industry is just not a loving, supportive place. They pretend sometimes, but it’s just not,” she admits in the trailer. Clips of her performing on large stages are intercut with behind-the-scenes footage of her exhaustion and a health issue, but she notes that music is what keeps her sane as she learned to be strong in the face of adversity.

“Coming out SOONER THANK YOU THINK,” Minaj wrote on Instagram. “I took some time to perfect this very intimate, delicate, electrifying, inspiring body of work. As I decide on a home for this project, I can’t help but reflect on what I’m including in this doc. Some things are so personal, it’s scary. It’s like NOTHING you’ve seen before & I need it to be handled with care. Love you so much. Thank you for the continued support.”
