A brave new world is still sought after by the men of Craig Green. A new area to explore, even though it seems for Spring/Summer 23 that nothing particularly noteworthy has been seen on the horizon.
The designer’s future-facers looked inward as they dressed for this foreign land, sharing memories and cultural memorabilia that had either been bolstered by life’s experiences or recoded with childish naivete.
Since there is no war to be fought or impending doom to prepare for, their nomadic attire does not consist of shawls and billowing capes a la Dune. Instead, they lose unneeded weight and end up with studded leather straps, mock-gag ties, and water bottles swinging loosely across exposed chests.
In Green’s futuristic world, backpacks with upright paraglider wings that are always ready to take off and metallic breast pockets that rest on mint-colored parachute jackets are also possible. Leather ties and pocket squares are used to create mock-origami versions of traditional workwear.
The foundation of the brand’s new aesthetic is made up of chunky, ever-expanding zips, peak-a-boo eyelets, loose, winding curves, and the body emerging from strappy harness belts and dark, slender denim collars.
As silhouettes grew wilder and more colorful by the minute, whether it was in fuzzy pastel pinks or cozy primary blues, plant pattern motifs introduced new, contrasting hues in puffy trouser legs lined with braided coat hooks. The way the denim was layered reminded us of boilersuit silhouettes, and the tabs that emerged from the suiting brought to mind the old-school cut-out and dress-up paper dolls.
As the show came to a close, several conceptual looks featured models wearing avant-garde padded cloaks; maybe these were the tribe’s elders? or the ones who were more harmed by the journey? We still do not know what exactly Green’s omniscience is preparing us for, but as the journey continues, the designer can relax knowing every stop looks just as magnificent as the last.
