The film, directed by James Wan (The Conjuring) and produced by Blumhouse (Halloween), stars Allison Williams as Gemma, a toy roboticist who makes the titular artificial intelligence doll. Gemma has the doll befriend her niece Cady (Violet McGraw), whose parents were killed in a car accident.

Everything goes as planned at first, but M3GAN’s protective nature eventually reveals a nasty side that no one expected coming.

M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a life-like doll programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally,” reads an official synopsis for the film. “M3GAN can listen and watch and learn as she becomes friend and teacher, playmate and protector, for the child she is bonded to.”

The film, directed by Gerard Johnstone and written by Akela Cooper, will be released in theaters on January 13, 2023.
