Mr. Saturday Presents SS23 “Sex & Politics: Shadow Play At Le Chat Noir” Collection

The Toronto-based label Mr. Saturday, run by Joey Gollish, bases its design philosophy on a study of history and pivotal moments in popular culture. Its most recent collection, which explores the European cabaret, follows a similar path for Spring/Summer 2023.

The new “Sex & Politics: Shadow Play At Le Chat Noir” collection, which was unveiled during Paris Fashion Week, brings the stories of Le Chat Noir, Cabaret Voltaire, and other venues to the runway.

Beyond its seductive nature, the new collection is motivated by the privacy and freedom these locations offered to the LGBTQ+ community. Avant-garde and restructured design elements are present in both menswear and womenswear items, bringing this narrative to life.

The collection includes jackets, slightly cropped button-down shirts, and checkerboard open-knit merino sweaters in addition to the brand’s signature oversized silhouettes that flirt with tailoring. The collection also includes loose-fitting shorts, pleated calf-length skirts, and relaxed pants.

The collection’s use of shadowplay, which can be seen in sheer organza, poplin cotton, and merino knit fabrics, elevates the variety of pieces. Cat graphics go beyond fabrications and add another level of sex and political commentary.

A soft blue and white European ballgown with an exposed back, a sleeveless open-chest turtleneck with a black leather harness, and custom boxing gloves are some of the collection’s other standout pieces. New handbags created in collaboration with Roots and new sunglasses silhouettes like the “Hugo” with rounded eyes complete the collection looks.
