Stampd’s Graphic LA Counterculture Capsule Channels ’90s Nostalgia

Stampd has never shied away from its love of early ’90s fashion, a pivotal period that gave birth to grunge and anarchist bangers from N.W.A. The new LA Counterculture capsule features a black-and-silver color scheme accented by distorted graphics and gothic typography.

The collection is inspired by ’90s pop culture, including the Oakland Raiders, the Los Angeles Kings, hip-hop, and football fandom.

If the act of defiance advances culture, Stampd’s interpretation of counterculture honors radical art and West Coast legacies still felt in LA and elsewhere. Stampd sharpens its graphic design language on a variety of T-shirts, long sleeve shirts, hoodies, crewnecks, and jerseys with edgy, textural accents like spiked gothic typography and an inky, zebra print with feathered detailing.

The Los Angeles-focused line pays homage to the Oakland Raiders, the bad boys of the NFL, and uses a black-and-silver color scheme in recognition of the team’s boisterous fan base.

The all-black crewneck with Stampd branding is the collection’s standout piece; it features a novel conceptual drip effect with graphic lettering that subtly disperses like a liquid emulsion. An image of Chris Stamp’s dog, Baxter, is depicted on the black, one-color long sleeve, which also has barbed wire accents on the sleeves.

Soft-touch flannel and terry basics reference nostalgic So-Cal culture, including pep rally gatherings and late nights spent mingling on the bleachers after games. They transition naturally throughout the season. Graffiti-like overlays pay homage to the city’s notable murals and the fearless creative communities that are rising to the fore, as with many Stampd collections.

Rounding out the capsule is an oversize hockey jersey with colorblocked paneling and gothic lettering at the front. The collection speaks to LA’s appreciation for stylized workwear and understated minimalism, but some pieces mix and match with streetwear staples like baggy sweatpants. While honoring the city’s original rebels who paved new ground and ushered in radical expression in art, music, and design, Stampd draws on LA’s dynamic youth culture.
