The colorful gradient dial of Seiko‘s newest dive watch is inspired by the Northern Lights.
The Prospex 1970 Mechanical Diver’s Modern Re-interpretation Limited Edition SLA063 depicts the Aurora Borealis lights observed in polar sky with a ‘delicate textured dial and gentle color gradation.’
The watch is a modern recreation of the timepiece worn by Japanese explorer Naomi Uemura on a solo 12,500km dog-sled run from Greenland to Alaska from 1974 to 1976.
To enhance the watch’s silhouette, Seiko combines satin-brushed surfaces with polished lines across the stainless steel case and bracelet, which have been coated with Seiko’s mysterious’super hard’ coating, while coupling the dial with a subdued blue dive bezel.
For maximum legibility, the sapphire crystal has a dual curve and an anti-reflective coating on the inside.
The watch is water resistant to 200 meters, has Seiko’s automatic Caliber 8L35 movement, and comes with a silicone strap with the same ‘train track’ pattern as the original from the 1970s.
Seiko will release the 500-piece limited edition Seiko Prospex SLA063 in October for $3,100 USD.
