The sequel takes place more than a decade after the events of the first film, which was released in 2009. The Sully family, comprised of Jake, Neytiri, and their children, is central to the plot.

The film follows “the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure as they fight for their home on Pandora.” Packed with state-of-the-art visuals, the trailer includes a reference to the original title, with Na-vi’s signature phrase: “I see you.”

Notably, The Way of Water will be the first of four Avatar sequels to be released. According to producer Jon Landau, fans can expect a “fulfilling resolution to each film, but when looked at as a whole the journey across all four will create a larger epic saga.”
