Jonathan Anderson‘s Spring/Summer 2023 campaign shot by David Sims is inspired by the work of British still-life and portrait painter William Nicholson (1872-1949) and American photographer George Platt Lynes (1907-1955), nothing is as it appears.
Anderson’s penchant for subversion manifests itself in the twisting of such historical references; muses Josh O’Connor and Stéphane Bak are just as important to the campaign’s attitude as the products themselves, their postures and poses providing a moving sensibility to Anderson’s latest collection.
There’s an irreverence to the campaign – O’Connor sits contemplatively holding ancient silver candelabras, as if they’ve been carried all day in his LOEWE tote bag. Bak, therefore, sleeps on a bed with his Puzzle bag, alluding to Lynes’ work of sensuality by introducing voyeurism.
