Apple Launches Self Service Repair, Allowing Users To Fix Devices at Home

Debuting for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 early next year.

With a new service, Apple will assist users in completing their own device repairs. Self Service Repair will provide clients with the instructions and tools they need to repair hardware issues at home.

The program, which is set to debut first for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 ranges, will premiere in the United States early next year, with intentions to expand to more nations until 2022. It will initially concentrate on basic hardware repairs such as the display, battery, and camera.

Customers in need of repairs will be directed to Apple’s Repair Manual before ordering the necessary equipment and parts from the company’s online repair store, which will stock over 200 individual items. Customers can return their used components when the repair is completed in exchange for credit against their purchase.

“Creating greater access to Apple genuine parts gives our customers even more choice if a repair is needed,” said Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer.

“In the past three years, Apple has nearly doubled the number of service locations with access to Apple genuine parts, tools, and training, and now we’re providing an option for those who wish to complete their own repairs.”

Apple plans to expand the program next year to include additional iPhone repairs as well as fixes to Mac machines equipped with the M1 processor. The program follows on from the company’s 2019 Independent Repair Provider program, in which it trains independent businesses to repair Apple products and provides them with access to original components and tools.

Apple stated that the service is “intended for individual technicians,” and that the bulk of users should still contact a qualified professional to get their devices serviced.
