Elmgreen & Dragset Present “The Nervous System” at Pace New York

This is the duo's first show at the gallery since joining in 2020.

Elmgreen & Dragset, a Berlin-based art pair specializing in large-scale installations, has revealed a new show titled “The Nervous System.” The two have recreated what looks to be a dysfunctional home within Pace Gallery‘s New York flagship.

The exhibition, which includes 10 new sculptures, reads like a novel, with the artists providing the visuals but inviting the audience to piece the plot together. In The Painter, Fig. 1, a youngster holding a paintbrush illustrates the idea that artmaking is a perpetual balancing act between reality and representation.

The examination of public spaces, from their social histories to its political and emotional weight, is a feature of their practice. “What matters is that art can make us less afraid,” Elmgreen remarked in a 2019 interview. Elmgreen & Dragset have previously exhibited around the world, most notably at the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2009. Pace New York is showing “The Nervous System” till December 18.
