Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA), known for their radical deconstructivist architectural designs, will design the new Hangzhou International Sports Centre.
Hangzhou is one of the world’s leading e-commerce hubs and home to many of China’s largest technology companies. The new sports center, led by the ZHA, will have a visionary outlook fitting for the Future Science and Technology Cultural District, where it will be located.
A new riverfront park and public plazas will also be built as part of the project to connect the sports center to the city’s expanding metro network.
The fully-equipped sports center aims to accommodate both amateur and professional athletes. The building will include a 60,000-seat football stadium and practice pitches designed to FIFA standards, a 19,000-seat indoor arena, and an aquatics center with two 50-meter pools, among other sports facilities.
Furthermore, half of the site can be converted into new public spaces for leisure, recreation, and relaxation in order to accommodate the city’s growing population.
