While the idea is still in its early phases of development, the young star recently confirmed the news on Instagram. Sweeney captioned a photo of the original artwork from the 1968 space opera “time to save the universe.” Barbarella was played by Jane Fonda in the original film.

The film was based on a comic series by French writer and illustrator Jean-Claud Forest about a space-traveling woman. It was not a box office success at the time, but it has established its own cult following in the decades thereafter.

Sweeney and Sony Pictures have previously collaborated on Madame Web. The actress co-starred with Dakota Johnson and is currently working on her next Sony film, The Registration, an adaptation of Madison Lawson’s thriller of the same name.

There is yet no information on the development timeframe for Barbarella, but stay tuned for more.
