Tyrrell Winston’s Latest Sculpture Captures the Energy Within a Basketball Net

Tyrrell Winston is known for using found materials, such as discarded basketballs, to create sculptural assemblages that fuel contemporary narratives about sports and their place in culture. He recently began an investigation into the myth of the celebrity athlete through large-scale paintings reminiscent of Cy Twombly, the iconic Abstract Expressionist.

Swimming Pools and Bubblegum is a new sculptural edition created by the New York-based artist in collaboration with Louis Buhl & Co. The artwork, which reflects the artist’s passion for basketball, freezes the moment a ball swishes through a hoop — a symbolic moment that captures the sport’s ultimate goal while also emphasizing the physical shape and movement of the object.

The sculpture, which is covered in a vibrant gradient, changes color depending on the angle from which it is viewed. Swimming Pools and Bubblegum, with its transformative quality, reminds the viewer of the enduring energy that exists within seemingly insignificant records of human existence.

Swimming Pools and Bubblegum is an edition of 20 works made of epoxy, chrome, and automotive urethane paint that can be purchased for $2,750 USD from Louis Buhl & Co.
