Located between a beach and a mountain slope in Piha, New Zealand is the Kawakawa House. Surrounded by a canopy of pōhutukawa trees, the two story house sits on a concrete plinth and metal stilts to give views through the woods density to the beach.

“Being overhung by dense foliage and shaded by mountain peaks to the east and north, the site is extremely sun-challenged,” explained Herbst Architects. “The concept for the design developed out of the need to maximise sun ingress and enable visual engagement with the beauty of the tree canopy.”

The living areas of the house are on the upper level, closer to the light and the canopy of the trees. A continuous clerestory window lets light in from above. Facing westwards out towards the ocean, the front of the house can be opened with a series of sliding doors, while glass balustrade shelters the kitchen, living and dining area from the wind.

The positioning of the house lets dappled light to enter the home through the tree canopy outside creates a changing atmosphere throughout the day.
